Description
About the Role
The Forward Deployed Engineer works where St1's business meets its technology: embedded directly with business units to turn real operational problems into working AI and software solutions, fast. This is not a back-office build role. You work alongside the people who run our retail, energy-trade, and refinery operations, translate their messy real-world needs into deployable solutions, and carry those solutions from prototype to a working result.
This is a mid-level role built for someone with a few years of solid delivery behind them who wants to move fast, work close to the business, and grow quickly. You won't be alone: you work alongside senior engineers, architects, and platform teams who support delivery, own the long-lived systems, and help turn your proven pilots into durable systems. The role exists to prove a model: getting prioritized use cases from idea to measurable value in weeks rather than quarters.
You are the fast-moving bridge into the business, feeding what you learn in the field back into our platforms and engineering practice. You bring a bias for momentum: you're comfortable shipping something good enough to learn from, and you help a team keep moving without losing the rigor that careful engineering brings. You keep both business value and technical quality in view.
How you’ll help drive the change
Joining St1, you’ll be part of running and developing a profitable business that invests in long-term energy solutions. Together we achieve the extraordinary through everyday work. As a Forward Deployed Engineer (AI & Software) you’ll play a key role in…
• Embedding with business units and group functions to scope, prototype, and ship solutions for prioritized use cases from St1's Use Case Log.
• Building rapid prototypes and proofs of concept, validating them against clear success criteria with business stakeholders, and supporting evidence-based go/no-go decisions.
• Driving technical delivery for your use cases day to day, making pragmatic build choices with guidance from senior engineers and architects on the bigger decisions.
• Using AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to compress delivery cycles without compromising quality, security, or compliance.
• Working closely with end-users, the data and AI teams, software engineers, architects, and platform teams, translating field requirements into features and feeding learnings back into the roadmap.
• When a pilot proves its point, joining the team that builds it for real: feeding your field experience and pilot learnings into a production-grade solution, so nothing you ship is left as an orphaned prototype.
We’re looking for a colleague with the drive to challenge, collaborate and grow. To thrive in this role, you likely have:
• Solid engineering foundation: a few years' experience building and shipping software or AI solutions, enough to deliver with confidence and grow toward a senior role.
• Hands-on depth in at least one of these areas: applied AI, cloud platforms, data engineering, or machine learning, with the curiosity to grow across the others.
• Strong delivery instinct: comfortable prototyping and iterating directly with non-technical users rather than from a fixed spec.
• Good translation skills: you turn a business problem stated in operational language into something buildable and explain trade-offs back clearly.
• Practical modern engineering: APIs, integrations, version control, testing, deployment, and AI-assisted development tools.
