Description
We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join St1's Software Engineering team, a team which operates at the intersection of St1's energy transition journey and modern software development. We handle the full lifecycle of software products and solutions across multiple business domains. Charging or fueling your car, getting it through an automatic car wash, or tracking how cooking oil becomes sustainable biofuel: all of it happens with software our team builds.

You will work closely with business stakeholders, architects, and technical specialists, from early scoping through to delivery. This is a forward-deployed role: you are as comfortable in a room with the business as you are in detailed analysis of the solution. You bring technical depth to the discussion, and communication skills are as important as tech competence.

The AI dimension of this role goes beyond using a coding assistant. We are actively rethinking how software engineering should be done in the age of AI: building AI-integrated pipelines, working with agents, and exploring what it looks like when humans and AI work as a team. We expect you to have solid hands-on experience with available AI tools, and the curiosity to keep pushing further.

How you’ll help drive the change

Joining St1, you’ll be part of running and developing a profitable business that invests in long-term energy solutions. Together we achieve the extraordinary through everyday work. As a Software Engineer, you’ll play a key role in…

• Being part of a forward-deployed delivery team working across one or several business domains, bridging the gap between what is technically possible and what the business and customers need.

• Working with business stakeholders, architects, technical specialists, and AI agents on requirements analysis and technical design, from early scoping through to delivery.

• Planning, implementing, and validating solutions with your team, and ensuring a reasonable level of maintenance and operational support.

• Providing technical leadership and helping align development practices across teams, not just your own solutions. Championing efficiency, transparency, and scalability in how we build products.

• Building AI-integrated development pipelines and tools, working with agents, testing agentic approaches, and helping the team adopt AI-native ways of working.

• Challenging existing ways of working and helping us rethink how software engineering should be done now.

• Keeping an eye on the technology landscape and making sure what we propose today does not become a problem tomorrow.

What you bring to the team

We’re looking for a colleague with the drive to challenge, collaborate and grow. To thrive in this role, you likely have:

Strong software engineering foundation with genuine AI-native experience. You do not need years of AI expertise, but you do need to have built things with it, encountered its limitations, and be ready to help us rethink what software engineering looks like from here.

• Solid experience with microservice architecture and distributed systems.

• Full-stack background with a strong backend focus.

• Fluency in Node.js (NestJS), TypeScript, .NET Core, and C#. Modern frontend frameworks (Next.js, React, Vue.js) are a plus.

• Experience with Google Cloud; hands-on with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

• Familiarity with architecture patterns such as DDD, SOLID, Hexagonal, and MVC, and the judgment to know when to apply them.

• The ability to write clean, testable, maintainable code and to work with established systems that were not built yesterday.

• Hands-on experience with modern AI building blocks: LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases and embeddings, agent frameworks, and emerging standards such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

• Clear communication in both directions: you listen well and you explain things in a way that lands, whether the audience is technical or not.

• Autonomy: you drive things forward without needing to be chased.

• A solution-oriented and collaborative nature.

• 6+ years in software development.

• A bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.

• Professional English; knowledge of a Nordic language is a plus.

Who are we looking for

We are looking for your passion, skills and drive. We're looking for those who recognize the St1 Spirit in themselves: Curious, Commercial, Committed and Caring. This Spirit shows up in daily actions: creating a space where it is safe to be yourself and raise problems early, following through when delivery gets tough, thinking end-to-end rather than in silos, and learning faster than the environment changes. Let us know what you can and want to do.

Why Join St1?

  • Shape how St1 builds software in the age of AI.
  • Drive business impact across products used by millions every day.
  • Develop your career in architecture, AI, data, or technical leadership.
  • Join a talented Nordic team where every individual makes a difference.
  • Enjoy a culture of trust, freedom, and responsibility.
  • Helsinki or Stockholm base, with excellent social benefits.
  • Help advance St1's vision of CO2-aware energy.
